What is a Geo Park?

What is a Geo Park? There is one on our door step. Geologist Benjamen Thebaudeau joined Keith Finnegan on this podcast to tell him all about the work involved.

 

The Joyce Country and Western Lakes region of North Galway and South Mayo is a treasure trove of breath-taking landscapes shaped by millions of years of geological activities and the more recent Ice Ages that shaped its lakes and mountains. It is home to a fantastic range of wildlife and local communities have developed a specific culture and accent based on their interaction with the landscape.

The Joyce Country and Western Lakes aspiring geopark aims to bring all of the above to the fore by becoming a UNESCO Global Geopark, a way to celebrate all the types of heritage mentioned above and highlight the region's offering as a whole. It also aims to educate the local community, young and old, and involve them in the sustainable development of their region.
